Arrangement
Arrangement follows right after scale. Large pieces naturally go against the walls and smaller ones out in the room. Good arrangement is a matter of liveableness. Who want a desk in a dark corner? Who wants an easy chair where you can’t see to read a paper? In the room below a sofa placed against the wood paneled wall is the center of a comfortable group from which to enjoy television on the opposite wall and the view and the light through the insulated glass wall. Note the modern reading light, end – table lamp, practical tweed – like upholstery covering, and silk gauze curtains hung from ceiling to floor.
Are you one of those who never have room enough for books? Today, when every inch of space counts, we make our walls work for us, not alone I n the library, which all often is a room of the past, but in every room of the house. Here adjustable book shelves are built in across two walls from floor to ceiling with cupboard below the shelves. Often a shelf at the proper level is used for the television, or radio, or both. And now they may be built in, if so wished. An equally nice part of this group is the wall – height window, wide enough and tall enough to bring in light and view. A full length curtain of casement cloth may be pulled across at night, its color practically matching the light wood work. A writing desk, chairs, and bamboo standard lamp belong to the modern school of design, while he desk lamp is traditional, but they fit in most pleasantly in this setting, which is an example of contemporary decorating, pleasing, but not bound by tradition.
