It is the background against which we live. Consciously or unconsciously, we are affected by our backgrounds – be they bright, gay, soothing, gloomy or merely drab. Above all, don’t let your background be drab. This is an age of color. Today our walls are yellow, not cream; dusty pink, not putty; soft blue and green, not gray. Against these we use brighter combination of two or three or more colors – such as clear blues, dusty pink, chartreuse, sunlight yellows, and deeper shades of blue, green, and red – in fabrics, as well as colorful pictures, lamps and accessories. Some small rooms are even in strong, deep colors. Bedrooms have gay wallpapers with many colors against tinted background. This doesn’t mean that we don’t have neutral backgrounds, for we do. But with cream or gray we use color in furnishings according to our taste. The different rooms illustrated will show you different uses of color; vivid, pleasantly colorful, and restful. Naturally the place and the type of room – light or dark – influence the choice of color.

The new building materials, going into the construction or houses, as well as the new design and manner of constructing the house themselves, affects the color of the walls and floors. This, consequently, affects the furniture draperies, and floor coverings. Plaster walls and hardwood floors are still used, of course, but many houses of contemporary construction, whether of one – story Colonial type, or the one – story rambling type – so called ranch house – many have the finished walls of brick or stone of the fireplace combined with plywood, or tongue – and – groove paneled wood. Floors may be of brick, stone, cement, rubber tile, linoleum, or wood block – to have carpet or rugs added, or not, as desired or needed.

That’s the first thing you must decide for yourself. The living room should be just what its name implies – a room to live in with real pleasure and comfort. Just what “pleasure” and what “comfort” will mean to you will differ according to where you live, the size of your family, the type of room you like and what you can afford. But let me say right now, that attractive rooms are a matter not of money but of taste. “But, ah,” you say, “tastes differ.” Yes, tastes do differ, but there are certain principles of good decorating which produce good taste in any type chosen and on any budget. The type you choose is a matter of preference. The way you interpret it is a matter of taste. Taste is putting colors, furniture and ornaments together in a pleasing way. Some women have a gift for doing this, others learn through observation and study. Seeing pretty pictures or actual rooms often helps us to know what we want. So here are pictures of different types of living rooms and the furnishings which go into them. Settle on the type you want and stick to it.

Television, large windows, combination rooms, new building materials, and techniques are decorating influences affecting so called decorating. But to my mind it isn’t decorating want to think about, but livableness. And “livableness” is really comfort: sofa and easy chairs that invite you to relax and enjoy television, a view suit your living needs.

Here is a corner decorated in the contemporary feeling, with plain wall surfaces, plain- colored draperies hung to the floor, and the comfortable furniture arrangement of our day. Light in corners brings out the size of a room. Therefore, a table and lamp near a window and a good seating arrangement give light both by day and by night, and make a live able group. Wall – to – wall beige carpet and clear blue upholstery are used, with color accents in the lamps and ornaments.

Living – dining room

Our 20th century living is indicative of the spirit of the age. We take greater conveniences and comfort as a matter of course and want our houses to suit our busy, informal living, but as always we take pride in them and want them attractive.

Architects of the modern school were quick to understand this and developed good plans for a smaller, but far more convenient kitchen, directly adjoining the dining end

Living-dining room of modern construction, spacious enough for a piano, sofa, easy chairs, and a dining group of modern design in light wood at the far end. The walls, which are a combination of glass, plaster, and wood veneer, with the fireplace in the center of the room, are in light ash tone. The casement curtains match. The wall – to – wall carpet may be one of the good rugged twists in soft green or cocoa color with the deep green of the many plants giving the needed accent. Three sectional modern chests, also called “unit furniture,” are used beyond the dining table to hold linen and silver. Note the ceiling spot light and adjustable wall spot lights for reading and for the piano.

New construction, glass walls, group windows, new heating and lighting methods, as well as the much loved open fireplace, have brought us a room of great charm and one which may be spacious in even a small house. Many an old house may have partitions removed to make such a room, but it is in the well – planned new building that we find the best examples of it. Naturally such a different background has brought about different furnishings.

OUR CONTEMPORARY DECORATING finds one expression which is typical of its charm, I the picture above. Plain colorful walls, light – colored rug, furniture of simple lines with draperies hung with pinch pleats from top of the window to floor. Here the walls are blue, upholstery and draperies corn color, accents maroon. 18th century English, regency, and modern combine here to make a distinctly live able room, contemporary in feeling Whether we like “modern decorating” or not we owe a lot the moderns. Their radical aims, for several years back rather than now, have given vitality, a sense of “ well, why not be different,” to all decorating, we have learned a lot about periods and the wiser among us now have also learned that we don’t have to be slavish followers. We can discard some old, use some new. We see beauty in the simplicity and use – fullness – moderns call it “functionalism” – that the new design is bringing us. So step out rather boldly in your thoughts about your new house, or doing over your old one, and find out for yourself how you feel about to day’s way of doing things. You’ll find a lot of clutter cleared away; you’ll find simplicity in overstuffed furniture; you’ll find reproductions of fine furniture, of Sheraton, Keppel white and other masters of furniture making.

A TABLE DESK BY A WINDOW whether the type, spells comfort Here is a fine example of a French style with slides at the ends, for greater length, which like the top have green leather surface. The cabinet, back of the desk, is in regency style, which frequently is distinguished by the wire grills used in the doors of the cupboards. Shelves for ornaments and books, with a deep drawer below, make this a useful piece.
